Cakes have gotten a bad rap. People equate virtue with turning down dessert....

This is perfect and lovely.
Eat the damn cake.

Decorating 101 c/o Miss Golightly
Lately I’ve been quite meh about decorating style or lack thereof. When will I replace the broken Ikea dresser? When will it become inappropriate for books to account for 70% of my possessions? That sort of thing.
Anyway, since my thoughts have been so very West Elmish, this list from HuffPo on Miss Golightly’s decorating philosophy made me smile.
1. You don’t need a real...

Birthday Cake
I commuted in a haze this morning - checking my phone every fifteen seconds feeling scared and sad. Then, somewhere between Fulton and Brooklyn Bridge, I remembered this exchange from last night and started laughing out loud. It’s worth sharing…
Me: Hey T, YOU turn 5 next week. Which sort of cupcakes are your favorite? T: Big ones. Me: Okay, bu - T: REALLY big ones.
The Millions : The Importance of Literature →
“Our bookstores hold a place in our communities where people go to escape their lives, to talk to a real person and just sit in a comfy chair surrounded by personally curated literature. This is what we do, who we are, so let’s make an extra effort to step away from our desks and computers and provide a safe and compassionate place for people to share their anger and grief today.”In the wake of...

We're Old
Co-worker Z: I need to sit. I'm ridiculously wine hungover.
Me: Ooooh no. It happens. Where'd you go?
Z: My house.

Julia Gazdag Taps Rob Gordon from High Fidelity as... →
thenovl:
Inspired by the concept of building a relationship through letters - or, in some instances, over these here interwebs - Julia Gazdag dreamt up her ideal fictional exchange and the result…well, it’s what #happylookslike.
It begins like this…
Me: Hey Rob. Rob: Hey Julia. Me: How’s your record collection? Rob: What? Me: I mean, how are you? Rob: You know the Beatles’ song Julia was about...

Musical Swings
My jaw hit the floor when I read about these swings on Karen Kimmel’s blog.
’21 balançoires’ is a giant collective instrument located in Montreal. These whimsical swings create melodies when swung together. “Developed by montreal collective daily tous les jours, the project explores notions of collaboration and the positive outcomes which can be a result of working together.”

Spring Bucket List
Ever since this past summer when I felt an extra set of sads as Labor Day loomed, I’ve made a point to try and get all I can out of a season. Write it down and do it - easy as that.
Winter flew and now we’re in that ambiguous month but it’s here, I swear, March snow be damned because spring is almost here. I can’t wait for the flowers and the pasty legs. That first time you eat dinner outside...

Tiny Beautiful Things
After a pizza induced book buying fest at WORD a few weeks back I wound up with a copy of Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things. I’ve since read it twice and seem to find ways to bring it up in nearly every conversation I have.
It’s not a perfect thing. I wouldn’t read it in a few gulps but rather bursts - before you go to sleep, the waiting room, and when the Q rolls over the bridge.
I loved...

– Nora Ephron’s Final Act | Jacob Bernstein for NYT
It’s entirely possible that you’ve already read or spotted this elsewhere on the Internet but in case you haven’t.
It is, as my favorite email intro put it, “a must read: though perhaps not terribly suitable for desk reading as I’m now drowning my...
